Welcome May!

I just returned from a few days up island. We enjoyed a getaway to Tofino and Ucluelet which included a 50k bike ride along the paved pathway (MUP) and a stop at Long Beach. I never tire of those wide open spaces and the sound of the surf. I came into this world not far from there so perhaps that is what draws me to it. Living on Vancouver Island affords me lots of opportunity to be next to the ocean which is such a comfort to me. I’m feeling so inspired and can’t wait to squeeze out paint!

After my latest workshop with Doug Swinton, I’m ready to go. The workshop focused on painting quickly, simplifying shapes which I found most liberating.

Here’s a few studies I did in the workshop, using Doug’s photos. Each one had a few tweaks from Doug to help me find my way. I painted the truck for my husband which he happily accepted for his den.

I tend to work from my own photos so taking this workshop will help me ‘edit’ the composition deciding what is important and hopefully get the result I’ve been looking for. If not I’ll have fun trying which is always the goal.

With the deadline quickly approaching for the Sooke Fine Arts Show I will be reviewing pieces for submissions this year. I have been fortunate to have my work selected by the jury in the past and ready to give it a go once again. This month I have two paintings in the Federation of Canadian Artists 2025 Landscapes Exhibition. This show opens May 12th and runs to June 1st. These two pieces will be available (online only as accepted under the recognized category). Watch for the link to view once the show is live, I will share on my social accounts. The FCA Landscapes show receives the most submissions so I’m both pleased and honoured to have my work selected.

Described as one who sees the art in nature, it is here where my endless inspiration comes from. Loving the challenge of capturing the feeling of where I stand, I enjoy recreating that feeling on canvas.
